What Causes Most RV Fires?
Yes most RV fires are caused by mechanical and/or running gear failures, overheated wheel bearings, dragging brakes, or blown tires, modified electrical systems, electrical system failures, and propane leaks.
Contrary to popular belief, cooking areas account for a relatively very small percentage of RV fires.
The most common origins and sources of these fires include
Running Gear and Wheels (26%): This is the leading origin point according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Low lubrication in wheel bearings, Incorrect or mixed lubricant in wheel bearings,
dragging brakes, and shredded tires generate extreme heat that can ignite nearby fuel, oil, or vehicle materials.
Engine Compartment (26%): Leaking fuel or oil coming into contact with hot exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, over charged batteries or faulty wiring is a major hazard for motorized RVs.
Electrical System Failures (24%): Overloaded outlets, chafed wires, loose 12-volt or 120-volt connections, DIY Solar system install's that don't meet compliance, poor and faulty inverters,
lack of maintenance of distribution panel, use of dielectric grease on sureline plugs, or batteries account for a significant portion of fires, often starting in unseen areas.
Appliances (e.g., Refrigerators and Furnaces): Propane refrigerators, furnaces and water heaters can cause fires when their venting areas get blocked by debris or insect nests,
or if electrical/propane components malfunction.
